Moulin Rouge - 2001

Director: Baz Luhrmann
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, Richard Roxburgh
Rating:

In 2001, a musical came out to theaters and as usual some people rushed to watch it and others raised some questions (I was one of them)… even regular movie attendants sometimes doubt the pleasure of watching such movies.
The common review I got was that people were getting out from its first quarter; I won’t lie and say that my excitement to see Moulin Rouge didn’t shudder but still I was interested. Yet, silly circumstances led only to the opposite and the movie was out. After almost two years, and on a boring night, I stumbled with it by chance on a movie channel. What was my reaction… wonderful, lovely, heart-capturing, and so underestimated that I felt like I had a mission to let everyone know how great the movie is and argue with all who left their seats before the movie ends… I couldn’t even blink!
In this movie, every element was selected with high delicacy to contribute to its aimed image, and since I am a big fan of its combination here is a breakdown:
- The Location: Paris! What’s more romantic and enchanting than this peace of land on earth! Anyhow, most of the movie scenes were set in one exact place in Paris, the Moulin Rouge (The Red Windmill), one of Paris’ most famous cabarets; it took its unique name from one of the many windmills in the Montmartre area of Paris, the red-light district. However, all the Paris scenes were digitally produced, therefore, having the two longest visual effects shots recorded to date in film history.
- The Cast: Satine (Nicole Kidman) the famous dancer of the Moulin Rouge, Christian (Ewan McGregor) an aspirant writer who falls in love with Satine, and The Duke (Richard Roxburgh) who is willing to fund their bohemian play “Children of The Revolution” (which has the same title of the movie soundtrack) if he gets Satine as his gift.
- The Costumes: A whole separate department was created with more than 300 costumes for this particular movie, without mentioning the jewelry, especially the $1,000,000 necklace Satine wore.
- The Songs: Lots of famous artists and bands had a part in this musical such as U2, Ozzy Osborne, Police, Kylie Minoque, Nirvana and many others who were approached like Frank Sinatra, Olivia Newton Jones, Ronan Keating, & Cat Stevens.
- The Plot: The plot line was a mix of three famous operas: “La Bohème”, about a young writer with Bohemian friends who falls in love with a sick girl, “La Traviata”, about a courtesan who learns that love can be true and sincere, and “Orpheus in the Underworld”, about a writer who travels to the under world of the Moulin Rouge to find his love and tries to take her back to the upper world. Such a perfect blend that only the talented can come up with.
If you are not into musicals, don’t give up on this movie and give it one more shot…
… And it you are already into upscale movies… I am sure you’ve already watched it… No you didn’t? Go watch it now!

It is a great movie indeed, especially if you watch it when you are high
What a great trip you will have.
The thing I liked most about it is the soundtrack, I like the idea of getting rock songs and rearrange them into classical / bohemian style, super kick ass selection and great rearrangement work done.
Kudos!
I actually hated this movie so much!! i usually hate this kinds of musical movies because i can’t see myself entertained by them…but i would say that “Moulin Rouge” was a blockbuster since it took most of the highlights in movies in 2001.
