The Fountain – 2006

Director: Darren Aronofksy
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz, Ellen Burstyn
Rating:

You know this unusual dream you sometimes have about an amusing fantasy, an unattainable desire, or your worst fear… this dream won’t occur in an explainable systematic flow; it is mainly scattered, delusional, and blurry images including some familiar places, faces, or even memories… this is The Fountain!
The Fountain is about love, life, & eternity and the aspiration to deserve them… like it is a right to have them all and not a reward to possibly have one.
It’s about a doctor/scientist, Tom (Hugh Jackman), who has a lovely sick wife, Izzi (Rachel Weisz), and his struggle to keep her alive and live together forever… The plot’s duration is quite short as the movie starts with a very advanced stage of Izzi’s sickness as well as Tom’s fear. The movie is purely philosophical; as the director mixes reason and delusion with different theories, cultures, and philosophies he delivers to you the interpretation of eternity from different views and allows Tom to escape reality and rescue his beloved by the help of fantasy and imagination… which is what Izzi’s book “The Fountain” provided to Tom.
An amazing movie with an amazing message… such a story doesn’t require special effects and massive budgets to reach everyone’s heart, which was well proven; the movie had a huge budget back in 2002 and didn’t see life until the budget was dropped to its half where Jackman and Reisz gave their full support to the director. Moreover, special effects weren’t made using CGI, instead the director used microphotography and chemical reactions to add a enduring effect to the movie where its magic won’t lose any value through time and production advancement.
See the trailer first to have an idea of what I am talking about… if you love the trailer you will definitely love the movie and if you don’t, then don’t bother
A movie with such a remarkable theory but in a dark presentation… a must watch!

This movie depressed me for almost 24 hours straight…
A great watch however.
[...] my view the story line had a partial influence by The Fountain, however, not as intense as the latter was. The graphics, on the other hand, had a Julie Taymor [...]
