One of the most powerful and enduring love stories that was ever portrayed on the big screen… a movie that does not endorse the cliché form of love where passion, jealousy, sorrow, and desire is all what it is about.
It’s about the true meaning of it… the concealed reasons that we all seek to find in a better half embodied in companionship and memories… the reason that makes the journey worth riding.
Away From Her is a movie about two lovers who happen to be married for 45 years for the fun of it… two lovers sharing the true meaning of life through the eyes of each other. As high and noble the translated feelings were as touched you will be by such a relationship.
Grant and Fiona have been an inseparable item through their less than perfect relationship; with all the ups and downs they have already experienced, yet, their biggest struggle upholds one last journey they will have to go through… Fiona’s unfortunate encounter with Alzheimer…
As Fiona’s symptoms grow critical, she pulls her love away when Grant’s attachment grows stronger. Drowning into ambiguity, Grant’s sad eyes defied a thousand reason to pour a single tear from the beginning and until the end of it all… sad eyes that would look at you and say: “I didn’t cry… don’t you dare do so!”
Eye language had its fair lot in this movie as Fiona’s gazing curious blue eyes made us as interested as she was whenever she’d look around to un-puzzle this feeling of familiarity of things she used to own, know, love, or hate… but couldn’t find a way to know why it actually is…
So as Fiona’s case worsen, she and Grant decide that moving to a specialized facility to be taken care of is the best option they have, however, she’d have to remain with no external contact for one month…. This is when lost and wretched Grant accepts the struggle and marsh towards his endless fight.
Just when the month ended, Grant goes to visit Fiona when he finds out that she now has a life of her own where romance took another angle in her life; an angle from which he can’t be seen.
Desperate Grant tries to regain back and amiability and compassion she used to provide him once when she fights him back… until he eventually understands that Fiona decided to let go the moment she stepped in to the facility; she let go of life outside, of all the love she had, of the great memories she fought to keep, and of the bad memories she so longed to get rid of. It was now Grant’s turn to set free the exceptional life he once shared with an exceptional woman and live the rest of his life observing her from far and trying his best to win her friendship, share few good times, read wonderful books, and divide one life into two separate ones.
“Do you think it’d be fun if we got married?” Said once wise Fiona thinking that she is going to share her life with her man till the end of it all… As conversational as a movie can be, still… a must watch!
