Rating:

A melodic journey of soul-searching and self-shaping… a wonderful translation of beautiful relations and elevated bonds… very well composed!

Here we ‘listen’ to the story of a bond formed between an unhappy cellist and a vibrant guitarist from two different worlds… and the blend of their contradicting backgrounds of refined classic melodies and rebellious brisk distortions on a breezy summer night… A memorable night that was playing its lovely melodies to celebrate the serendipity of such a symphonic romance… with a tint of a gazing melody a Harmonica has added to complete its piece of music.

Such a perfect union that was broken long before it even bonded, leaving two souls not knowing how lost they were until they finally found each other.

Evan Taylor (Freddie Highmore) is an orphan, who escapes foster home in search for his parents whom he thinks they are searching for him as well! With the help of nature who believes its melodies will guide him to their way, he wanders through the realms of uneasy path and melodic directions; as he listens, we see flashbacks of a momentous love-sparked night between Lyla and Louis…

Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell), a famous cellist, finishes her concert and escapes her nosy father to a party with her girlfriends when she meets Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), the lead guitarist of a rock band, where they share a story that is yet to hold them lots of reminisces over the years… leaving them not only with the emotive Harmonica tune, but a genius who is yet to be discovered. The two could never meet again nor find out about their lost child due to some misfortunes that you will get to know through watching.

Evan’s journey upholds him lots of acquaintances which all add up to making his dream come true; from the kind social worker “Mr. Jeffries” (Terrance Howard), to the eccentric musician “Wizard” (Robin Williams), to the little angelic voice “Hope”…

Events intermingle between the lives of the three artists; while Evan’s journey floats between contradicting darker and brighter shades in not only searching for his parents but discovering his gift as a musician, we learn that Lyla and Louis’s unfortunate events made her let go of her profession as a cellist and him quit his band and love for music… Destiny plays it own symphony in twisting up incidents and tying loose knots to finally create another serendipity on another breezy night in the very same spot where a love-story once was written.

Music production was majorly focused on while making the movie as music was the main driver of the movie’s theme and the child’s dream… It took the composer Mark Mancina 18 months to be able to complete the original score of the film where the final piece was composed at first and then scattered and hidden in smaller simpler pieces in previous scenes of the movie… he wanted to build up a puzzle of melodies that poor together into one extravagant masterpiece at the final scene where its tunes would be subliminally heard by the listener/viewer.

Performances granted the right kick to elevating this artistic bit to another dimension. The impersonation of all characters was beautifully and so naturally portrayed. No one would reflect a feminine cellist, or a striking rock star, or a joker-faced prodigy, or a warm-faced counselor, or a pensive-eyed orphan as the cast did.

A dreamy artistic flick not meant for the habitual viewer. A view to be heard and a symphony to be watched! Surrendering to the idea that practical magic and enchanted reality can do the works of our life events is what makes the movie worth the watch :)

Great watch to lift the spirits… tasteful and optimistic from start to finish. Performances, music and plot well done. Loved it! And Freddie Highmore is probably my favorite child actor, hope he makes the best out of it while it lasts (childhood that is).

  2. Sana Said,

As you always say: who could ever forget the sweetheart from Finding Neverland :)

  3. domeagain Said,

Freddie Highmore was great, but what made this a wonderful romance was Jonathan Rhys Meyers! He is not only beautiful and sexy but a very fine actor.
