Amelie – 2001

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Amelie – 2001

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Cast: Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus, Claire Maurier

Rating:

Spiritual, controversial, funny, and sad at the same time!

The film has been labeled by the mysterious smile of Amelie Poulain and her quirky feminine haircut… without mentioning its soundtrack that became a melodic anthem for many TV commercials, record previews, and social events.

The movie is about a little girl named Amelie Poulain and the circumstances she was born under. The little girl was always alone; she seeks emotional isolation as a protection method from the whereabouts of the universe. Amelie grows up to be a sweet innocent tiny woman who is still shadowed by her barriers and seeks inner peace by observing the minor aspects of life… things that an average person’s eye fails to catch. Not so long until Amelie finds a way to pay back the gift of being alive… she decides to make ‘Random Acts of Kindness’.

The movie’s disposition drifts us to one impression… so illusory! As simple as the story sounds, yet, the behavior of people, colors of nature, & flow of events are somehow eccentric… comically eccentric!

The movie received contradicting views for it unusual nature; in general it got a positive public reception in France where they found the plot intriguing and Audrey Tautou an amiable aspirant actress, however, there was an opposing view where some found that it portrays an unjust image of the French society lying distortedly in certain ethnic aspects. Professional reception, on the other hand, had its opposing share as well; the movie failed to appear in the Cannes Film Festival under the reason of being “Uninteresting”. Nevertheless, the same movie got nominated for five Academy Awards, thirteen Cesar Awards, and nine BAFTA Awards.

Amelie Poulain is just a normal girl with a bunch of basic reasons for survival. All details tend to be boringly casual even the movie itself… but then, there is some mystical charm that glues you up to your seat and suppresses your boredom…

The ultimate serenity of Amelie along with the movie’s thematic melodies leaves you with a warm memory… For the sake of Amelie Poulain’s unforgettable smile… watch it.

  2. Kamikaze Said,

Hmmm… it is an interesting movie in deed. I rarely enjoy foreign movies, and I admit I only watched this one because of all the pushing and urging by friends. But when that little gold fish committed suicide (hilarious)… that was the one push I needed to really watch and enjoy! Beautiful :)
