A month ago, I went back home to see family and I can’t actually tell what was going on but everything around me was screaming… The Godfather!!
Starting with the background music in both airports, to Marlin Brando’s biography that was showing on TV when I reached home and my Father’s ring-tone… as if the movie was haunting me… it was bizarre.
Then while as I was walking in one of my hometown’s streets, a DVD store was just setting up its place and unloading the stock… interesting! I thought, so I went in and The Godfather DVD collection was right in front of my eyes when I decided… I have to get it and watch it with my family since they haven’t seen it before (unlike me, my parents are not movie freaks… at all).
I made sure I don’t leave the country before making sure they watch at least the first part and luckily I did… as if I was handed a mission to watch the movie one more time.
You will never get enough of this movie. Despite its duration, lengthy intense conversations, and hard-to-pronounce Italian names, still, it finds a way to lock you up to your seat to the last minute. No wonder why it’s the Godfather of all the movies ahead… if I may say so.
While watching, I kept stealing glimpses at my mum’s face to make sure she is entertained since it’s hard to do so… But once the movie ended her reaction was “when are we going to watch Part Two?”
Al Pacino and Marlin Brando did wonders by embodying the Mafiosi figure and portraying family connections as if it was all real and as if they all existed some time back in the 1950’s.
Who can ever forget Don Vito Corleone and the legendary family he had:
- Don Vito Corleone: One of the major heads of the five biggest Italian-American families in the States. He controls the entertainment business and is known among his community as The God Father.
- Mama Corleone: A dear kind mother who has nothing to do with the family business, she holds the tender side of the family.
- Santino Corleone or Sonny: An arrogant and aggressive man. He is the eldest son of Vito’s children. He takes care of most of his father business despite his impulsive judgments and short temper.
- Connie Corleone Rizzi: The only daughter of the Corleone family. She is edgy and emotional and married to Sonny’s friend, Carlo Rizzi.
- Fredo Corleone: A slow-minded spontaneous man. He is the 2nd son who is always pampered and taken care of.
- Michael Corleone: An ambitious and well-educated man. He is the youngest son who used to be very far for his dad’s business until circumstances drives him to an alternate path. He is in love with a beautiful young lady, Kay Adams.
- Tom Hagen: An adopted son and the family’s attorney… he is the center of the family’s circle of trust
The movie starts with a happy moment that sums up the Corleone’s family ties and show you how connected and close to each other they are. Then it gets cruel where it takes you a while to understand the family business and the threats, fear, and enemies they are surrounded with and how eventually Michael (Al Pacino) takes over his father’s legacy. It focuses on absolutely two opposite sides of the human being; the terrible, dirty, & monstrous side and the tender, family oriented, and caring side.
Despite its lengthy runtime, you will never feel bored as the movie carries lots of revelations and unforeseen events.
A masterpiece that every person is ought to watch and a mighty classic in every sense… its story, direction, performance, and adaptability to all kinds of audience makes it too good to be true.
If you still wonder how Al Pacino became a legend, how the movie’s theme is almost a universal anthem, and how every movie is compared to this upscale standard… The Godfather is the answer to all that… & you really don’t need me to tell you if you should watch or skip this one
!
