Beowulf – 2007

Director: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Roy Rinstone, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Angelina Jolie, Robin Wright Penn
Rating:

To all myth lovers who swear by Elves, Werewolves, & Wizards and hope to visit The Shire one day, here is a new movie that you are going to love. I watched this movie only once and on an IMAX 3D screen, thus my judgment is going to be further cheering than any other viewer.
The movie is well made and as it’s is a predictable success the lead actor is just an aspirant one (Roy Rinstone), yet, such movies can’t go without some legendary faces like Jeremy Irons in Eragon and Ian McKellen in Lord of the Rings. This time instead of one they added two, Anthony Hopkins (King Hrothgar) and John Malkovich (Unferth). There is also another interesting attribute to the superficial; the bad guy turns out to be a bad girl and not any other girl, its Angelina Jolie… so finally we get to see her playing her real identity after living out of her skin for quite sometime trying to portray herself in a gentle, kind, and tender figure. In this movie she is wicked, gives birth to weird creatures, and appears vaguely nude… no wonder you’ll stop reading now and go watch the movie…
To move into the essence of the movie; as it is said, the heroic character “Beowulf” is the creation of an English Lengthy Epic Poem between the 5th and the 6th century. So after all this is a very famous myth and not the director’s (Robert Zemeckis) formation, therefore, adding a striking ambiance to the movie.
Speaking of which, I just want to mention that I am a big fan of Robert Zemeckis for his diversity and great imagination in direction. Through years, he had entertained us with all sorts of good movies and the most famous of them are “Forest Gump”, “Contact”, & “Castaway” so his movie direction history proves that he is an exceptional director…. cant wait to see his next film!
Another recognizable remark but not in Zemeckis’s favor this time, is that the characters of the movie where digitally enhanced to an extent where you don’t sense them as real actors… but computer generated ones. I don’t really know if the only reason behind this was to cut the make-up costs (since you will see lots of creepy creatures and signs of aging throughout the flow of events) or to change the whole identity of Roy Rinstone whom if you seen in real life is a totally different person. Well, we did see some recent movies that were shot with blue screen and not only the actors where enhanced (without mentioning the significant six-pack abs everyone had… even the agedJ) but backgrounds, battlefields and castles were created as well; however, actors still looked human.
As I said before, myth lovers are going to like this movie; otherwise it’s fairly entertaining… so if you wanna add a new hero to your list… go watch it!

I loved this movie sincerely! and I am a myth lover actually, especially norse
Yet I am still not getting the point behind animating real actors and getting a fat dude (Roy Rinstone) to star this movie, and yet make his body as that of a true myth legend!
But overall the experience was great, and the fact that the movie is based on a poet is very sensible, the structure and flow of events and how the story builds up and ends is just so solid!
I haven’ t seen the movie but I would like to..The thing is I always hated big production companies changing the real history into a Holywood story. Like “Troy”, like “Alexander, the Great”. I only know little about the Beowulf story but I fear that they added popularistic themes into the film to make more charming. Anywa, as I understand from your view, it is still a good movie to watch!!
By the way, a really nice movie review blog. I like watching movies and my partner and my friends do not understand how I can watch so many movies without getting bored. So, it is good to have the opportunity to read the opinions of a fellow movie lover
