Seven Years in Tibet - 1997

Director: Jean Jacques Annaud
Cast: Brad Pitt, David Thewlis, B. D. Wong
Rating:

Brad Pitt keeps proving his theory: I look good but I act better. A lovely historical drama that in addition to its capturing story, you get to learn more about the famous far-eastern culture; the Tibetan Culture, the Dalai Lama, and the lessons inherited from their great teacher Buddha.
None of the faces you are going to see in this film is instantly recognizable, thus, the focus on the movie’s plot is gonna be your only concern.
Another thing that impressed me in the movie was the young Dalai Lama. Actually I was taken by the fact that the he was such a bright boy. Despite his young age, he could persuade you with his insight and make it enjoyable to listen to his conversation… it was pretty much impressive.
This movie is a combination of a man attributes as well; how tough and fragile one man can be at the same time. How tough he is when faced with impossible challenges, unpredictable conflicts, or life-threatening encounters, and how fragile he can be when confronted with family failures, a lovely woman’s face, a kid’s wisdom, or a man’s friendship.
The first few things that come to your mind when hearing about this movie are temples, prayers, and wisdom lessons. Now you will get to see some of these but all in time and perfect sense. However, the movie’s flow of events smoothly takes you from one state of mind to the other with occasional emotional pauses when looking back to the past, evaluating failures, or feeling lovely.
As I mentioned, other than it’s great story about Heinrich Harrer (Brad Pitt), the movie is a reference to the Tibetan civilization and to the friendship that did in fact occur between the Austrian guy and the Dalai Lama which still exists till this day…yes this movie is based on a true story.
So if you wanna learn about the worlds of wisdom and you’re not into reading books or watching documentaries here is something you should think about…
… And if you wanna witness one of Pitt’s major movie hits during the nineties, this is chance to find out how his acting was…
… And if you really wanna enjoy some quality movie that does touch you by embarking life’s great conquests and victories, this is one of the classic movies that one day will be stated in the “1001 Movies to Watch Before You Die”… Definitely watch it!

I agree that the movie really cannot be missed, a MUST SEE.
However I am a documentary head, and I found this movie thrilling and capturing rather than educational…
A true masterpiece.
