I Am Legend - 2007

I Am Legend - 2007

Director: Francis Lawrence

Cast: Will Smith

Rating:

It took the movie producers so much time and effort to bring to life this massive production; they had to shut down one of the major crowded cities in the world to shoot some scenes in it’s streets, they spent almost a year and a half trying to make the best of this hit-to-be, they were over swamped with the movie that they forgot to add a plot to it… Yeah, the movie is plot-less!

Who wants to watch another sleazy cheesy zombie movie! Who wants to waste time with pointless adrenaline rushes and get out from the theater babbling about the shallowness and insignificance of the movie and all its supporting campaigns who presumed that it is the biggest production ever, Will Smith’s major hit, or an amazing embodiment for the best seller, The Omega Man.

It took me around two weeks to decide on watching the movie; lots of controversial speculations rose around its subject, trailer, title, and Will Smith himself. Some assumed that it would definitely be a block buster… since all the scenes where shot in New York itself and not computer generated and that Will Smith has been up to everyone’s expectations for the last two years so this might be one of his good movies. However, the other lot sticked to one idea…. The movie has zombies in it! Specially that the trailer leaves no room for imagination; they show them to you and get you prepared. Personally, I went to the theater with a genuine hope that the movie would turn out to be something else, maybe with a twist just like “The Village” where monsters were all over until a twist of a very unusual origin hits you…. a thrilling movie indeed.

End Result: hopes were vanished! Minutes were passing as the movie’s monotonic intensity is rising. The only excitement you will get is someone’s scream or jump… thanks to the blood-thirsty zombies. Shock/Disappointment expressions were stamped on all viewers’ faces… Will Smith & Blockbuster lovers’ expectations hit bottom… All the thoughts of “maybe it’s a lucid dream, a frightening joke, or a freaky hallucination” were collapsing towards the last minutes of the movie.

I was really let down by Will Smith’s choice of such a fragile synopsis, of the critics’ comparison of Smith’s performance to Hanks’ in Castaway, and of all the promises granted for this movie to enter the history of the timeless motion pictures. Don’t waste your time…. Just skip it!
